Jews have never ascribed to a doctrine of sola scriptura, the Protestant claim that individuals reading the Bible could determine for themselves its practical and spiritual message. Rather, we have always studied Torah through the prism of rabbinic interpretations, first the classic midrashim of the rabbis, and then later interpretations of rabbis and scholars through the ages. Each week of this five-session class will focus on a Torah commentator and examine his or her historical context, method of interpretation, and a selection of some of their most "famous" comments.
The cost is $15, which includes a kosher lunch. To RSVP for this course, contact the Chicago Loop Synagogue office at 312-346-7370 or loopadmn@chiloopsyn.org.
