Israel Movie Night: "Hollywood: An Empire of Their Own" (1998)
Monday, February 17, 7:00 PM
1 hour & 38 minutes

Winner of the Best Jewish Experience Documentary award at the Jerusalem Film Festival, this documentary, directed by Simcha Jacobovici, chronicles the amazing success story of the half-dozen Jewish immigrants or sons of immigrants who created the movie industry studio system and became the moguls of Hollywood during its Golden Age.

Based on Neal Gabler's best-selling book, “An Empire of Their Own”, this feature-length documentary tells the story of the men who founded Hollywood: Adolph Zukor, founder of Paramount; Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal; the Warner brothers, Harry and Jack; Louis B. Mayer, founder of MGM; William Fox of 20th Century Fox; and Harry Cohn, head of Columbia. In the process of reinventing themselves as Americans, they reinvented America.

First-hand accounts of the movie moguls' lives are told through a series of original interviews with their children and grandchildren, and with commentary by film historians, critics, actors, and producers.

Sponsored by the Israel Committee.
Pizza, pop, popcorn, and chips will be served.
