The Talmud in Bava Batra (roughly pages 7-12) explores a number of complex communal questions and dynamics that puzzled the rabbis then and still resonate today:
-How long does it take to become a part of a community?
-Where is the line between accessibility and security?
-How much charity should be given?
-Who is exempt from communal obligations?
Each week, we will delve into a sugya [Talmudic section] that explores one of these questions. This class will include an introduction as well as chevruta-study time to work through a particular text and commentaries. While previous experience studying Talmud is recommended, key vocabulary will be provided with translations of key sources available as well. Participants are encouraged to use whatever version of the Talmud they feel most comfortable learning from.
We'll meet for 3 Mondays in July (7/15, 7/22, 7/29) from 6:30 - 8 PM and in 2 Mondays in August (8/19 & 8/26) from 8 - 9:30 PM. Please register below.
