Instructor: Misha Vilenchuk, United States Chess Federation Chess Master
Supervisors: Florina & Oren Dekalo

Class Description:
ASBI Children’s Chess Club (ASBI-3C) is an instructional chess program for children in Grades 1-8. The purpose of this program is to provide our synagogue’s youth with an opportunity to partake in a safe, social, and intellectually-stimulating activity on Shabbat afternoons. Participants will have the opportunity to both learn strategy and apply those skills through actual game play. This program is designed for children who have proficient knowledge of how each chess piece moves.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe plays chess with his son-in-law in Perchtoldsdorf, Austria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for ASBI-3C?
Any child in Grades 1-8 who can demonstrate proficient knowledge of how each chess piece moves is eligible for ASBI-3C. For any child who is interested in the class but does not yet possess this proficiency, Florina Dekalo will be stationed at a table on the other side of the room teaching children how the pieces move, at no charge. These children do not need to register.

When will ASBI-3C take place?
Classes will take place on two Shabbat afternoons each month between September and December from 12:30 - 1:30 PM in Shlensky Social Hall. There will be 8 classes total. We are planning to offer the class again, starting in January.

Who is the Instructor?
Misha Vilenchuk is a United States Chess Federation-rated chess master and a highly regarded instructor. He is a former North American K-12 co-Champion and has been an instructor for some of the top chess players in the country over the last nine years. While Misha is both a new ASBI member and a new Lakeview resident, he is well known to several ASBI members and leadership. Misha will be available at Kiddush to meet with any families who would like to meet him.

How much does ASBI-3C cost?
Thanks to a very generous discount from Misha, ASBI-3C will cost $80 for the session (8 classes at $10 each).

Will the class be supervised?
Yes, Florina Dekalo and/or Oren Dekalo will supervise each class until the class ends at 1:30 PM. Parents are expected to pick up promptly at 1:30 PM.

Can I observe the class?
Absolutely. Parents are welcome to observe the class and are encouraged to stay afterward and play with their children if they so choose.
