Contemporary Jewish Studies and the Jewish Community

Friday, December 17, at ASBI

Join us for dinner at 5:15 PM and a panel discussion at 7:00 PM with scholars visiting for the annual Association of Jewish Studies (AJS) Conference! Hear from Jewish academics Sarah Zager, Daniel Mackler, and Dr. Lindsay Simmonds, on how their scholarly work relates to their personal religious practice. Panelists will each answer this question by sharing a text from their research.

Registration for Shabbat dinner is now closed. However, all are welcome and encouraged to join us at 7:00 PM for the panel discussion even if you aren't attending the dinner. The post-dinner talk will take place in the main sanctuary (masks required).

DANIEL MACKLER is a doctoral student in modern Jewish thought at the NYU Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies. He is interested in the permeable boundaries between rabbinics, philosophy, and historical consciousness in modern Judaism. His current research centers on the thought and legacy of 19th-century Galician rabbi Nachman Krochmal. Daniel published an article earlier this year on Zechariah Frankel and Maimonides, adapted from his undergraduate thesis on the same at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

DR. LINDSAY SIMMONDS is a Research Officer as part of the Global Religious Pluralities project; her particular remit is research into Women of Faith and Peacebuilding. She is also a Fellow at the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) where she has lectured, written and convened courses for over 20 years, focusing on women in Biblical narrative, the Talmud and Jewish Law. Lindsay is involved in several national and international interfaith projects, including co-chair of her local Jewish-Moslem Women’s Network Nisa-Nashim, a trustee for the Abraham Initiatives UK and Jewish Scholar-in-Residence for the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ). Lindsay studied at Nishmat in Jerusalem, was a Bruria Scholar at Midreshet Lindenbaum, and is a graduate of the LSJS Susi Bradfield Women Educators’ Fellowships. She received her Master’s in Gender Studies and her PhD from the LSE’s Department of Gender.

SARAH ZAGER is a PhD candidate in Religious Studies and Philosophy at Yale University, where her research focuses on ethics, feminism, and Jewish philosophy. Before coming to Yale, Sarah earned an MA in Religion from the University of Chicago and a BA from Williams College. She has learned at Yeshivat Hadar and taught shiurim for Drisha. She was a David Hartman Center Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Center of North America and is a recipient of the Leo Baeck Fellowship for the study of German Jewry.
