Social Action Dinner with HIAS Chicago

Friday, May 26, 2017 1 Sivan 5777

8:30 PM - 10:00 PMASBI

“In every generation, a person is obligated to see himself or herself as though s/he came forth from Egypt.”
Haggadah

Join us for Shabbat dinner on Friday, May 26, as we learn about the major issues facing the current generation of immigrants and refugees. Learn what is happening here in Chicago and how we as individuals and as a community can become involved. The primary speaker for the evening will be Jessica Schaffer, Director of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society of Chicago (HIAS).

For over a century, HIAS Chicago, a program of Jewish Child and Family Services, has been one of the most respected providers of immigration services in the Chicago metropolitan area. Founded to help Eastern European Jewish immigrants in the early 1900s, and supported by the Jewish community, HIAS expanded its efforts to address the needs of various refugee and immigrant groups. HIAS Chicago currently serves refugees and immigrants from around the world, regardless of religion, race, or national origin.

It is with great pride and admiration that we acknowledge the many ASBI community members who have been motivated to take action, through both HIAS and other organizations. Speakers will include ASBI Members Naomi Sugar and Faye Kroshinsky, both of whom have been working with RefugeeOne, as well as an attorney who has worked with asylum seekers and participated in the emergency response to the travel ban at O’Hare Airport.
