YOM HASHOAH

HOLOCAUST REMEMBERANCE DAY
Community Memorial Ceremony & Lecture

Thursday, May 1
8:00PM at Anshe Sholom B'nai Israel Congregation
540 W. Melrose St. Chicago, IL 60657

The evening will include prayers with Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi and other neighborhood synagogue leaders, a candle lighting ceremony, as well as a lecture with Chaye Kohl, Jewish educator and child of a survivor

Holocaust Memory in the 21st Century

As Holocaust survivors are leaving us, we must find new models of education to preserve Holocaust memory for future generations.

Chaye Kohl has been a teacher and a principal in Jewish Day Schools in New York, New Jersey and Florida, and is the child of a Holocaust survivor. She teaches Literature of the Holocaust, and served as Historian and Bus Captain on March of the Living (a trip for adolescents to Poland and Israel) for five trips. Ms. Kohl received her M.A. in Judaic Studies; her thesis focused on a group of British prisoners-of- war who saved a young Jewish girl from a Death March.

She worked as a researcher, translator, and interviewer, for the Center for Holocaust Studies in Brooklyn, before its archives merged with the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York. She has shared her knowledge and experiences related to Holocaust history with both students and adults in the classroom and from the lectern.

Volunteer to read names of Holocaust victims or recite a poem or another reading at http://asbishul. googlepages. com

MIKVAH IS OPEN!

MIKVAH OPEN FOR USE! The Adam R. Straus Memorial Mikvah is open for use as of Monday, April 7! For now, only women's hours are available. To make an appointment, call either Rachel Lopatin's cell phone Rachel Finegold's cell phone . Once there are phone lines installed in the mikvah, you will be able to call the Mikvah directly.
Many thanks to the hard-working Mikvah Committee (especially Naomi and Jeremy Fogel, Emily and Daniel Gottlieb), to all the donors, and to the Mikvah Attendants. A special thanks to David Ash, our site manager, who has been there every step of the way and without whom this project would not have come to fruition. And thank you to Hashem, for bestowing this blessing on our community.

The Kelim - Vessels - Mikvah is open. It has a dedicated entrance on the east side of the mikvah, opening directly from the driveway. It is available for use on mornings immediately after services (7:45 AM), when Rabbi Lopatin or Rachel Finegold can open it up by request, and in addition from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. It is customary to make a donation when using the Kelim Mikvah. The immersion of dishes in the mikvah sanctifies them for use in a Jewish home. Anything used for preparing or serving food, and made of metal or glass, should be immersed in the mikvah, as long as the water will not ruin the vessel.

Join Rabbi Lopatin, members of the Israel Committee, and fellow members of Anshe Sholom at the pro-Israel community's premier annual gathering, the AIPAC Policy Conference. Call the ASBI office for details.

JUF BOOK DRIVE at ASBI:

JUF TOV Volunteer Network is sponsoring a book drive at ASBI this spring in conjunction with the annual Spring Mitzvah Mania project. Collected books will be donated to schools participating in the JUF TOV Literacy Project and other local social service agencies. New and gently used children's books are welcome.
Please contact TOV at (312) 357-4762 or tov@juf.org for further information or for a list of requested books. A collection box is in the shul lobby.

Misheberach List

In order to have better kavana (intention and feeling) for those who
are ill, and to keep track better of who is still ill and who has,
God willing, recovered, the shul will now start a new list each month of people our members would like on the Misheberach List of those who are ill. Please call the office after the first of each month to have any name you want listed for the next month. If you want a name removed during that month, please tell the office or the rabbi. If not, the name will remain on the list all
month, and will be read on Shabbat M'varchim.

May all those whom we are praying for have a full and speedy
recovery, a Refu'ah Sh'leima.

Stained-glass windows

There is a sense of wholeness and artistic integrity in our
sanctuary, thanks to our beautiful stained-glass windows, located on
the east wall, dedicated in memory of Bernard Preis, o"h. The
windows on the south wall are dedicated in memory of George Friedman,
o'h.

Learing to Lein

Do you know your Bar Mitzvah parsha, or part of it? If so, please call the office ( 773-248-9200) and we'll sign you up to lein. Or, if you would like help with leining - even a half parsha or less - contact us.

Finally, if you would like to learn how to read Torah or other parts of the service: men, please be in touch with Rabbi Lopatin, who can match you up with someone who would love to spread the tradition and the responsibility; and women, please be in touch with Rachel Tessler Lopatin.

From our member, Paula Lustig, Leining Coordinator Emerita: There's a website for learning to lein – chant – the Torah or Haftorah: http://bible.ort.org. You can hear Torah and Haftorah chanting line by line.

So please, sign up for leining!

Gush Katif

Please remember those of our people who sacrificed their homes, in Gush Katif,  and who need our help now.  Please give to the Orthodox Union's fund for them: Orthodox Union Gaza/Shomron Fund.

National Council of Jewish Women DV Courtwatch Program

Every 12 seconds a woman is beaten and every 6 hours a woman is killed in the US. Why?  Domestic Violence. It has been shown that the best way to reduce DV is to have courtwatch programs. Courtwatch programs make those involved in the judicial process aware of public interest and concern, and enable advocacy for needed services.

NCJW has a Courtwatch Program in Chicago and needs volunteers.  It is very flexible. You can go as often or little as you wish.  For more information contact Barb Creinin by telephone at: 847-674-7844 or by email at: bcreinin@comcast.net. You may also contact Merle Titus at: 847-234-7936 or merlelisa@aol.com. Your presence is felt in the court. It requires only your time and commitment.
