Social Action

“It is to share your bread with the hungry and to take the poor into your home; when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to ignore your own kin. Then shall your light burst through like the dawn…” (Isaiah 58:7-8)

The above quote from Isaiah is lifted from the Haftorah we read on Yom Kippur, poetically summarizes our Jewish charge to reach out to the needy. The Social Action Committee organizes volunteer events and mobilizes our ASBI community to answer the call declared every day in the Alenu: “l’takayn olam b’malchut Sha-dai,” to perfect the world under the kingdom of G-d. Together we can fight social injustice and do our part to bring about Tikun Olam, a perfect world. Our volunteer opportunities have included volunteering at the JUF Café, the Ronald McDonald House on Christmas Eve, bringing children to the Lieberman Home to sing Chanukah songs, and organizing a CPR class. ASBI is also an active member of the Lakeview Action Coalition, a non-profit, multi-issue community organization (www.lakeviewaction.org).

If you would like to spend two hours performing a mitzvah, we have an opportunity for you: One evening a month, members of ASBI set tables, serve, and chat with clients at the JUF’s Uptown Café.  The dinners are for low income participants who are registered members of the center.  If you would like to volunteer for JUF's Uptown Café, please click here.
