Halacha of the Week #16
Each person is obligated in the Mitzvah of lighting candles before Shabbat, ideally in the place where the Shabbat meal will be eaten (unless you will be eating at someone else’s home that evening). Although it is traditionally the woman’s role to light the candles, both men and women are obligated in this Mitzvah. As long as one person in the household is lighting Shabbat candles, that entire household has kept the Mitzvah. If one moves out of one’s parent’s home into one’s own apartment, even if the parents are lighting candles in their own home, the individual is now considered a “Baal Habayit,” head of his or her own home, and must light his or her own Shabbat candles.
