Halacha of the Week #9
Once Shabbat is over, one may not eat or drink anything that night (except water) until he or she has said or heard Havdallah. Even if one has prayed Ma'ariv, thereby reciting the "havdallah" section in the "Ata Honen" bracha, one is still obligated to make the usual Havdallah, and should not eat before doing so. If one delays making Havdallah and does eat, one may still say Havdallah until sundown on Tuesday, because the first few days of the week are connected to the previous Shabbat. (OH 299)
