Halacha of the Week #5
The halacha prohibits the use of an umbrella on Shabbat because our Rabbis included it the prohibition of erecting a temporary shelter. Even if one opens the umbrella before Shabbat, one is still prohibited to use it, lest he or she come to open or close it on Shabbat. It is permitted, however, to open or close a sun shield or umbrella that was attached to a baby stroller or patio furniture before Shabbat. (Sh’mirat Shabbat K’hilchata 24:15)
This series gives brief practical tips about Halachic issues that arise in daily life.
