Halacha of the Week #4
Although Shabbat officially begins at sundown (18 minutes after
candle-lighting), women who light candles accept Shabbat early,
with the action of lighting the candles. However, if a woman verbally
states (or even has in mind) that she is not accepting Shabbat with
this action of candle-lighting, then she can continue to do melacha
until the time that Shabbat actually begins. This is useful if one
plans on lighting candles and then still take care of a few more
things before Shabbat, or if one needs to travel to shul by car or bus
after lighting candles.
Shulchan Aruch, Orech Chayim #263 (Misha Brura #42 #44)
