Answering “Amen, Yehei Shmei Rabba…” to the Kaddish is considered a great mitzvah, and there is a tradition that whoever answers to the Kaddish erases any evil decree. The rabbis encourage us to answer to any Kaddish (mourners kaddish included, but the others as well), out loud and with special concentration. The Ashkenazi custom is to stand. (Shulchan Aruch OH 26)
