Halacha of the Week #73
A pregnant or nursing woman, in consultation with her doctor and a halachic authority, should eat and/or drink a minimal amount on Yom Kippur. The minimal amount for drinking is approximately 1.5 ounces every 9 minutes In this way, she is ingesting less than a Biblical shiur (measurement), and is still considered to be “fasting” on a Biblical level without endangering her or the baby’s wellbeing. This may also apply to individuals with other health conditions, such as diabetes, and one should take very seriously the Mitzvah of “Ushmartem Me’od et Nafshoteichem”, to protect one’s life and health. A detailed discussion about how to calculate these measurements can be found on the Star-K website toward the bottom of this article:
