Halacha of the Week #62
The mitzvah of visiting the sick is understood to be a Rabbinic commandment that has its roots in two Biblical mitzvot: “You shall walk in the path of God” (Devarim 28) and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Vayikra 19). We imitate God by being merciful and kind to those around us. We show we love our fellow human beings by caring for them in their time of need. One should only visit the sick if it will not inconvenience the patient. If the gesture is appreciated, one should go as often as possible.
