Halacha of the Week #58

The melacha of smearing or smoothing on Shabbat prohibits the use of any solid object that you smooth into liquid form. For example, bar soap is prohibited, but liquid soap is permitted. Anything that is loose enough to pour or flow, is permissible for use on Shabbat. This also applies to lotions and lip glosses – if they are liquid enough to pour, then they are permissible on Shabbat. This limitation of smearing does not apply to food, so one need not worry about smearing your peanut butter on Shabbat!
