Halacha of the Week #48
Before beginning bedikat chametz (checking the house for chametz on the evening of Erev Pesach) one recites the bracha “asher kideshanu… al bi’ur chametz.” After one recites the bracha, it is best not to speak (except about matters that relate directly to bedikat chametz), until you have completed the bedikah. One person makes the bracha, and then he or she may do all the checking on his/her own, or alternatively, if other members of the household answer “Amen” they can each take responsibility for checking part of the house. It is customary to put out small pieces of chametz around the house, so that this is not a wasted bracha and you will certainly find some chametz. If you did not put out these pieces of chametz, you’ve still fulfilled your obligation of bedikat chametz. This bracha also applies to the burning of the chametz the next morning.
