Halacha of the Week #40

The power of communal prayer is very great, and one should make every effort to say the Amidah, the core of the Tefillah, with the tzibbur (congregation). Therefore, if you arrive at shul late (whether during the week or on Shabbat), and you want to catch up in order to join the tzibbur for the Amidah, you should skip most of the Psukei D’zimra, and just say Baruch She’amar, Ashrei and Yishtabach. If you have enough time, then say the first and last of the Halleluya’s after Ashrei. If you have less time, then say just Ashrei, if it means that you will get to the Amidah at the same time as the tzibbur. However, one should be sure to say the Shema, along with the brachot that come before it and the paragraphs after it, since that is meant to serve as an introduction to the Amidah. (OH52) A tip: On Shabbat morning, we usually reach the Shema by about 9:30 AM, so try to make it to shul by then!
