Halacha of the Week #32

One should recite Kiddush (whether on Friday night or Shabbat day) in the location where the meal will take place. If you recite Kiddush in one room, and eat in a different room within the same building, then you should have in mind when saying/hearing Kiddush that you will be eating your meal in a different room. If you make Kiddush in one building and then eat your meal in a separate building, then that Kiddush is not sufficient, and you must make Kiddush again when you get to the meal location (OH 273). Notice Anshe Sholom’s custom: when we eat next door at the JCC, we recite Kiddush at the JCC. But when we eat downstairs in Shlensky (on weekends when the JCC is closed) then we recite Kiddush in the sanctuary itself. Since this is a different room within the same building, this Kiddush is sufficient since we have in mind that we will be eating downstairs.
