Halacha of the Week #24
The obligation of putting up a mezuzah rests on the person who lives in the home. Therefore, if one is renting an apartment, it is the obligation of the renter (and not the owner – if the owner is Jewish) to put up Mezuzot. When the renter moves out, if the next renter is Jewish, then it is customary to leave the Mezuzot on the doorposts rather than take them with her when she leaves. It is appropriate, however, for the next renter to pay her for the cost of the Mezuzot. If the next renter is not Jewish, however, one is not obligated to leave the Mezuzot behind.
This series gives brief practical tips about Halachic issues that arise in daily life.
