Halacha of the Week #20

Although this Shabbat is technically Shabbat Mevarchim (as the month of Tishrei begins this week) we do not bless the new month this Shabbat as we do other months. This is traditionally meant to confuse the Satan (the heavenly “accuser”) so that he does not realize that Rosh Hashana is fast approaching. Similarly, we refrain from blowing the shofar on Erev Rosh Hashana (although we’ve been blowing it throughout the month of Elul) in order to confuse the Satan.
