Halacha of the Week # 19
One must recite the Shema with the utmost kavanah (concentration/ intention), especially the first verse, which is the declaration of the foundation of our faith. For this reason, it is customary to recite the first verse aloud, with eyes covered. If one recites this verse without the proper kavanah, one does not fulfill his obligation to recite the Shema. If one realizes later, after he has already finished saying the “V’ahavta” paragraph, that he did not recite the first verse with the proper kavanah, he should return to the beginning of Shema and start again.
